    Throughput, Bit-Cost, Network State Information: Tradeoffs in Cooperative CSMA Protocols

    In wireless local area networks, spatially varying channel conditions result in a severe performance discrepancy between different nodes in the uplink, depending on their position. Both throughput and energy expense are affected. Cooperative protocols were proposed to mitigate these discrepancies. However, additional network state information (NSI) from other nodes is needed to enable cooperation. The aim of this work is to assess how NSI and the degree of cooperation affect throughput and energy expenses. To this end, a CSMA protocol called fairMAC is defined, which allows to adjust the amount of NSI at the nodes and the degree of cooperation among the nodes in a distributed manner. By analyzing the data obtained by Monte Carlo simulations with varying protocol parameters for fairMAC, two fundamental tradeoffs are identified: First, more cooperation leads to higher throughput, but also increases energy expenses. Second, using more than one helper increases throughput and decreases energy expenses, however, more NSI has to be acquired by the nodes in the network. The obtained insights are used to increase the lifetime of a network. While full cooperation shortens the lifetime compared to no cooperation at all, lifetime can be increased by over 25% with partial cooperation.Comment: Some typos in v1 were corrected, to be presented at ISWCS 2010 in York, United Kingdo

    Optimal Power Control for Multiuser CDMA Channels

    In this paper, we define the power region as the set of power allocations for K users such that everybody meets a minimum signal-to-interference ratio (SIR). The SIR is modeled in a multiuser CDMA system with fixed linear receiver and signature sequences. We show that the power region is convex in linear and logarithmic scale. It furthermore has a componentwise minimal element. Power constraints are included by the intersection with the set of all viable power adjustments. In this framework, we aim at minimizing the total expended power by minimizing a componentwise monotone functional. If the feasible power region is nonempty, the minimum is attained. Otherwise, as a solution to balance conflicting interests, we suggest the projection of the minimum point in the power region onto the set of viable power settings. Finally, with an appropriate utility function, the problem of minimizing the total expended power can be seen as finding the Nash bargaining solution, which sheds light on power assignment from a game theoretic point of view.     Cyclic Interference Alignment and Cancellation in 3-User X-Networks with Minimal Backhaul

    We consider the problem of Cyclic Interference Alignment (IA) on the 3-user X-network and show that it is infeasible to exactly achieve the upper bound of K22K−1=95\frac{K^2}{2K-1}=\frac{9}{5} degrees of freedom for the lower bound of n=5 signalling dimensions and K=3 user-pairs. This infeasibility goes beyond the problem of common eigenvectors in invariant subspaces within spatial IA. In order to gain non-asymptotic feasibility with minimal intervention, we first investigate an alignment strategy that enables IA by feedforwarding a subset of messages with minimal rate. In a second step, we replace the proposed feedforward strategy by an analogous Cyclic Interference Alignment and Cancellation scheme with a backhaul network on the receiver side and also by a dual Cyclic Interference Neutralization scheme with a backhaul network on the transmitter side.Comment: 8 pages, short version submitted to ISIT 201

    Automatic Genre Classification in Web Pages Applied to Web Comments

    Automatic Web comment detection could significantly facilitate information retrieval systems, e.g., a focused Web crawler. In this paper, we propose a text genre classifier for Web text segments as intermediate step for Web comment detection in Web pages. Different feature types and classifiers are analyzed for this purpose. We compare the two-level approach to state-of-the-art techniques operating on the whole Web page text and show that accuracy can be improved significantly. Finally, we illustrate the applicability for information retrieval systems by evaluating our approach on Web pages achieved by a Web crawler

    Hardware Impairments Aware Transceiver Design for Full-Duplex Amplify-and-Forward MIMO Relaying

    In this work we study the behavior of a full-duplex (FD) and amplify-and-forward (AF) relay with multiple antennas, where hardware impairments of the FD relay transceiver is taken into account. Due to the inter-dependency of the transmit relay power on each antenna and the residual self-interference in an FD-AF relay, we observe a distortion loop that degrades the system performance when the relay dynamic range is not high. In this regard, we analyze the relay function in presence of the hardware inaccuracies and an optimization problem is formulated to maximize the signal to distortion-plus-noise ratio (SDNR), under relay and source transmit power constraints. Due to the problem complexity, we propose a gradient-projection-based (GP) algorithm to obtain an optimal solution. Moreover, a nonalternating sub-optimal solution is proposed by assuming a rank-1 relay amplification matrix, and separating the design of the relay process into multiple stages (MuStR1). The proposed MuStR1 method is then enhanced by introducing an alternating update over the optimization variables, denoted as AltMuStR1 algorithm. It is observed that compared to GP, (Alt)MuStR1 algorithms significantly reduce the required computational complexity at the expense of a slight performance degradation. Finally, the proposed methods are evaluated under various system conditions, and compared with the methods available in the current literature. In particular, it is observed that as the hardware impairments increase, or for a system with a high transmit power, the impact of applying a distortion-aware design is significant.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communication
